Only ever had lag/connectivity problems with the limelight(?) crap that happened a while ago. Has been perfect for months now. I'm in Australia on iiNET, anyone with similar problems that have just started? Can anyone shed any light on recent ccp changes (hosting etc)?
I had exact same problem as you. Sydney area. What I did was change the port.
Funnily enough, though, restarting one of my computers made it connect it again.

At this point, I'd say it's time somebody go off and ring iiNet or complain on Whirlpool, but last time I did that, all that happened was being told by fanboys that it's:
a) my DNS
b) my hosts file
c) my router
d) my connection
e) my firewall
Ugh.
Though this very well could be the sea cables busting up again.
Or the CCP's end.

I just signed upto Whirlpool to reply to that thread of yours, and checked back just to get the linkie. Har. You can always give the link 'ere. Save Valan, who, according to my degree in science (we do statistics) can be considered outlier, it seems only people who has problem like this is people on iiNet. I downloaded a couple o' other MMOs to test, and I'm having trouble connect too.
Hell, only good use for Whirlpool is to find out if there's a problem anyway. It's damn choke-full of fanboys that it's like arguing on a Mac forum, or hardcore-PC forum about superiority of another platform.
Yell at'em loudly for me too.

Sydney time, 10pm to 6am or so seem to be the times when this screws up.
More data needed for more reliability.

Rung iiNet. They apparently have no faults and have no clue what's going on. It was a helpful chap I spoke too, and he says I should go bug Eve people, since it may be on their end.
